Clay, crayons, pencils, wood blocks and paints were a constant presence in Lindsay Peyton’s childhood. In high school, she took her first oil painting class – and was smitten. She also took up black and white photography, and fell in love with the darkroom, when she was 17.
Art classes were not the only influence – she was further swept into the field of art by travels to France, where she traced the paths of Van Gogh and Monet to experience the beauty they observed a century and a half ago. She also counts among her inspirations the light and colors of Mexico.
Today Peyton's works in oil, pastels, charcoal and ink have been featured in numerous group and solo shows in galleries and arts festivals around Texas.
A summer 2013 residency in the Paducah (KY) Artist in Residency program as well as a solo show at Winter Street Studios Gallery and a group show at Pictures Plus Gallery in Houston last fall are among her most recent endeavors. Over the past few years, she has also donated works in support of Haitian relief efforts, the Italian Consulate, Avenue CDC, efforts to stop human trafficking and the Leukemia Foundation.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in photojournalism from the University of Texas at Austin, Peyton was named the creative director at a stained concrete company in the Houston area. She followed this with a role as instructor at City ArtWorks, an after-school elementary arts program. Peyton then worked as an assistant art teacher at Kinkaid School as well as a gallery director at McWhorter Gallery. She has also served as a former member of the Spacetaker artist advisory board and the Houston Arts and Culture board.
